I was a "cat lover" and, in my youthful, somewhat narrower mind, the two were mutually exclusive somehow. That all changed one day when a whole flock of bluebirds came along and perched -- one by one -- in the the "squares" of openings in the hurricane fencing across the driveway. I had never, ever (outside of the South) seen bluebirds before... I made a point of studying the names and descriptions so that, now, I pretty much know the names of all of our local avian visitors.
